[Event "ICC 45 45"]
[Site "Internet Chess Club"]
[White "Opponent"]
[Black "BDK"]
[Result "0-1"]
1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. g3 f5 {Thanks, Tempo, for suggesting this response to
the English. I love it! He played it horribly, and if I were better I could
have won this game much more convincingly.} 4. e3 Nf6 5. Nd5 {
He's not developing at all and I am almost ready to castle.} Bc5 6. Nxf6+ Qxf6
7. Qh5+ {His queen move seems premature. He has no pieces developed. My plan
at this point is to develop fast, castle queenside, and attack. I never get
the opportunity to castle queenside. I also keep a close eye on chances to
trap that bitch.} g6 8. Qh6 Nb4 {Whatever happened to my plan? Hey, you've
gotta be flexible and this move Fritz likes. If I'm lucky I'll get Nc2 in.
Otherwise I can try d5, followed by Nxd5 if he takes. Plus there is potential
for an outpost on d3.} 9. Kd1 d5 10. b3 {Oops I thought he'd take. Hope chess.}
e4 {To give my Knight a potentially great outpost and keep his bishop from
getting much activity along the long diagonal.} 11. Rb1 Nd3 {? A blunder.
Better is d4, closing off that diagonal and just crunching down on space in
the center. It is also tactially unjustified: Rb1 should have been a clue, but
I completely overlooked the obvious response Bb2! and it nearly cost me the
game. A third problem is that I have moved that knight three times now and I'm
trading it for a Bishop that's doing nothing. So why did I play it? My
thought at the time was that I wanted to get rid of his light-squared Bishop
to take advantage of the weak white-square complex on his Kingside and
eventually expoit it with my two Bishop advantage. A perfect example of
letting planning about subtleties get in the way of thinking concretely about
tactics and more important positional ideas like grabbing the center, two
things that are just killer. Because of this move, I deserved to lose the
game.} 12. Bxd3 exd3 $1 13. Bb2 d4 {Forced, or so I thought. Fritz prefers
Qf8! The best defense should include a threat. Always look for threatening
moves rather than pure defensive moves (HT: Tempo and Glenn Wilson on that
point).} 14. exd4 Bf8 {Bxd4 was my plan, but then I noticed Nf3, and I didn't
want to give up the Bishop pair to Bxd4 Nf3 Bxb3. That would have been better.
I was being greedy, not only with the Bishop pair, but his d pawn becomes a
huge pain the ass.} 15. Qe3+ Qe7 16. Nh3 Qxe3 {I thought this was forced, as I
valued that passed pawn so highly, especially given that it is on the opposite
color of his Bishop and it would take a few tempi for his rook to snag it.
Fritz says no way: get that light-squared Bishop out of there to d7 so you can
castle sooner.} 17. dxe3 {That passed d pawn is funny lookin', and that queen
exchange gives him a beautiful pawn structure.} Bh6 {I spent a ton of time on
this move. I was trying to trap his Knight, but really was it trapped? He
should gladly give me his knight for the Bishop pair and an open file for his
rook.} 18. d5 O-O 19. f4 {Now my Bishops are just inactive.} Re8 20. Kd2 {
Now I'm thinkin, if he grabs that pawn I'll give him some problems with a rook
if I'm able to get that d pawn of his out of the way...} c6 {
Desperately trying to open files for my rooks. My pieces need activity!} 21.
dxc6 bxc6 22. Nf2 Bb7 23. Nxd3 {Giving me a nice opportunity to pin his Knight.
} Rad8 24. Rhd1 c5 25. Ke1 {
? This was probably his downfall. Gives me space to check with my rook.} Bf3 {
I had considered Be4 as well, but I just liked the look of this, keeping the
lanes for both rooks open. But in reality my move sucked, and I should have
checked with my Rook.} 26. Rd2 {? Kf2 avoids all the fireworks that follow. He
just gave me the game, and I was pissed off so I was determined to take the
point.} Rxe3+ 27. Kf2 Rdxd3 {And now it is a matter of time. Major power with
rook batter in his territory, and my dark-squared bishop can now come out into
the game.} 28. Rxd3 Rxd3 29. Re1 Be4 30. Ba3 {Basically giving me a tempo.} Bf8
{Giving me a tempo basically.} 31. Bc1 Bg7 32. Re2 Kf7 33. Ba3 Bd4+ 34. Kf1
Rd1+ 35. Re1 Bd3+ {
His rook is gone and his King will be gone soon, so he resigns.} 0-1
