1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5 4. c3 Nb8c6 5. Ng1f3 Bc8d7 6. Bf1e2 Qd8b6 {a variation of the french advance I don’t play anymore. Typically I find that the queen doesn’t have enough effect here and has to be retreated so I’ve taken up Nge7 instead intending Ng6 and f6}
7. O-O cxd4 8. cxd4 Ng8e7 9. b3 Ne7f5 10. Bc1e3 h5 {to prevent g4 booting my knight note that taking the e3 bishop is a bad idea due to whites attack against f7 (i.e. Ng5)} 11. Nb1c3 Bf8a3 {played to prevent Rc1, but I think white can play Nb5 at any point to boot the offending piece}
12. Ra1b1 {a wasted move, probably to prevent the fork Bb2, but this is met by Na4 winning the bishop) Ba3b4 13. Nc3a4 Qb6d8 14. Be3g5 Bb4e7 15. Bg5xe7 Qd8xe7 {blacks dark squares now lack a defender.Nc5 or if possible Nd6 are very dangerous ideas now.}
16. Rb1c1 Ra8c8 17. Na4c5 b6 18. Nc5xd7 Qe7xd7 19. Be2b5 Qd7b7 20. Rf1e1 {why not Qc2, Kd7, Rd1 inteding d1-d3-c3 while freeing the knight from it’s defensive duties. Note that black still has Nf-e7 available but then he will be fully on the defensive with a very weak kingside (h5 has backfired)} a6
21. Bb5xc6 Rc8xc6 22. Rc1xc6 {Now black’s problem is how to develop his rook without the kingside being overrun. h5, Ke7 seems the movst natural but black still doesn’t have a good counter then to Qd2! with threats of both Rc1 and Qg5+ I think 0-0 is required followed by g6 and hope that white screws up this simple attack.} Qb7xc6 23. Qd1d3 {I still prefer Qd2 as while this is a one move tempo, it’s blacks dark squares, not the light ones which are weak.} b5 24. Qd3d2 Ke8d7 25. Re1c1 Qc6b6
26. Nf3g5 Rh8c8 27. Ng5xf7 Rc8xc1 28. Qd2xc1 Qb6xd4 {I consider ths position to be equal} 29. h3 Qd4d3 {? I think that instead Ng3 was called for with the simple yet brutal threat of Ne2, Qe1, Ne4! and black is now better do to having a far superior minor piece} 30. Qc1c5 Qd3d1
31. Kg1h2 Qd1d4 32. Qc5c2 Qd4b6 33. Qc2d2 {and white is again attacking the weak dark squares which black simply cannot defend. +-} Qb6c7 34. f4 Kd7e7 35. Nf7g5 Qc7c5
36. Ng5f3 Qc5e3 {? the check cannot be allowed. b4 was a better move blockading the queen’s entry into the black position} 37. Qd2b4 Ke7d7 38. a4 Qe3b6 39. Qb4f8 bxa4 40. Qf8f7 Kd7d8
41. Nf3g5 axb3 {simply hoping for a gaffe by white, but the game is already over} 42. Ng5xe6 Kd8c8 43. Qf7xf5 b2 44. Ne6xg7 Kc8c7 45. Qf5c2 Kc7d7

1. d4 {I had a brief infatuation with this move, but the KID effectively killed it} Ng8f6 2. c4 g6 3. Nb1c3 Bf8g7 4. e4 d6 {ugg the KID} 5. Bf1e2 O-O 6. Bc1g5 {maybe this is book maybe not, I was playing off an idea of karpov’s from the english where he tries to force h6 claiming it to be a weakness} h6
7. Bg5e3 e5 8. d5 a6 9. Qd1d2 Kg8h7 {Ng4, BxN, BxB, f6, Bd7, Bxh6} 10. f3 Nf6h5 11. O-O-O {g4 seems a reasonable alternative here as it prevents black from playing f5 and the Bishop on e3 prevents Qh4+} b5 {While I can’t say it’s terrible I don’t like this gambit because it provides a use for whites light squared bishop which was previously hemmed in by his pawns} 12. cxb5 axb5
13. Be2xb5 Bc8a6 14. g4 Nh5f4 15. Bb5xa6 {I don’t want to drop the a2 pawn} Nb8xa6 16. Be3xf4 exf4 17. Ng1e2 {I decided to complete development instead of taking the pawn. This allows the threat Nxf4 and g5 can be met by Nd4! +- the second point of this is that after BxN, NxN can be played instead of bxc3 when I will have to deal with rooks on the a& b file} Na6c5
18. Qd2xf4 {Nxf4, Bxc3, Qxc3, Rxa2} Bg7f6 {I don’t understand this. Qh4 seems a more effective move connecting the rooks and preventing the h-file from being opened} 19. h4 Bf6xh4 20. Qf4h2 g5 21. Ne2d4 Rf8h8 22. Nd4f5 Kh7g6
23. Nf5xh4 gxh4 24. Qh2xh4 Qd8g5 25. Qh4xg5 {deciding to simplify to a game two pawns up with a passed a-pawn} hxg5 26. a3 {the desire was to allow the Nc3-b5-d4, but I didn’t consider the loss of the f-pawn. Easier was probably Rxh8, Rxh8, Nc5} Nc5b3 27. Kc1c2 Nb3d4
28. Kc2d3 Nd4xf3 29. Rh1xh8 Ra8xh8 30. Nc3b5 Nf3e5 31. Kd3d4 Rh8h2

36. d6 Ra6a7 37. Kd4c5 Ng4f6 38. Nc4e5 Kg6g7 39. d7 Nf6xd7 {the rest as they say is matter of technique which at my level is not always there} 40. Rd1xd7 Ra7xa3
41. Rd7xf7 Kg7h6 42. Kc5d5 Ra3a5 43. Kd5e6 {using the knight as a shield for the king.} Ra5a4 44. Ke6f5 Ra4a6 45. Ne5g4 Kh6h5

1. d4 Ng8f6 2. c4 c5 3. Ng1f3 cxd4 {I figure that the central pawn is probably better than the c-pawn, but this has often lead to Maroczy-bindish positions for me which are no fun} 4. Nf3xd4 Nb8c6 5. Nb1c3 g6 6. e4 {Marcozy bind} d6
7. Bf1e2 Bf8g7 8. Bc1e3 O-O 9. O-O Nc6e5 {panning to bring the knight to c5 via d7 increasing the pressure on e4} 10. h3 a6 11. f4 Ne5d7 12. Qd1d2 Nd7c5
13. Be2f3 Qd8c7 14. Ra1c1 Bc8d7 15. Nc3d5 Nf6xd5 16. cxd5 {I consider this to be white’s mistake. While it threatens b4 and further cramps blacks position, exd would have left black with an almost indefensible e7 pawn} Qc7b8 17. b4 Nc5a4
18. Rc1c2 Rf8c8 {Trying to exchange to win back some breathing room} 19. Rf1c1 Rc8xc2 20. Qd2xc2 Qb8c8 21. Qc2xc8 Ra8xc8
22. Rc1xc8 Bd7xc8 {White still has more space but has given away the majority of his advantage, solid defense gives me good hopes for a draw} 23. Kg1f2 Bc8d7 24. a3 Bd7b5?? {horrendous loss of a pawn} 25. Nd4xb5 axb5 26. Be3c1 Na4c3
27. Kf2e1 Kg8f8 28. Ke1d2 f5 29. exf5 (29. e5 dxe 30. Kxc3 e4+ 31. Kd3 exf3 32. gxf3 is good for white as black cannot defend the b-pawns.) gxf5 30. Bc1b2 Nc3e4 31. Kd2c2 Bg7xb2
32. Kc2xb2 Ne4d2 33. Bf3e2 Nd2c4 34. Be2xc4 bxc4 35. b5 e5 36. g3 h5
37. h4 e4 38. Kb2c3 e3 39. a4 Kf8e7 40. a5 Ke7d7 41. Kc3c2 Kd7c7 42. b6 Kc7d7
43. Kc2c3 Kd7c8 44. Kc3c2 Kc8d7 45. Kc2c3 Kd7c8 46. Kc3c2 Kc8d7 {a very interesting ending. Black uses a common theme with seperated passed pawns to ensure that they are immune from capture while white threatens a6, bxa6, b6-b7-b8=Q and black defends with his king. I believe that white has an interesting resource and timing is the key. White must wait until the black king is on the back rank. i.e. Kc3, Kc8, g4!, fxg4, f5, g3, f6, g2, f7, g1=Q, f8=Q+. Unfortunately after studying this for awhile, the extra tempo may not avail black despite the fact that the white queen can win the d-pawn with tempi. Further analysis is needed here} 1/2-1/2

1. e4 e6 2. Ng1f3 d5 3. e5 c5 4. d4 {an inferior move order into the advance variation of the french this should be prefaced with c3} cxd4 {had c3 been played before d4 (or the normal 1 e4 e6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 c5 4 c3) the e-pawn would retain it’s support} 5.
