{The goal was to play a tight, passive game... and try and last as long as
possible} 1. e4 {He opened with e4, which I had hoped for. Most comfortable
playing the Sicilian Defense} c5 2. d4 {He plays d4 right away rather than
the more traditional Nf3... This is called the Smith Morra gambit} cxd4 3.
c3 dxc3 {Basically, in the Smith Morra Gambit, he offers me the c3 pawn,
but in exchange for rapid development of his knight with Nc3.} 4. Nxc3 Nc6
5. Nf3 e6 6. Bc4 d6 7. O-O Be7 8. Qe2 Nf6 9. Rd1 {Up through move 9, I have
actually played (guessed, mostly) a theoretically sound game. I castled too
early, leaving my center vulnerable} O-O (9. .. Bd7 10. Bf4 e5 11. Bg5 Bg4)
10. e5 {He plays e5, and I immediately feel sick to my stomach. I think
I've made a mistake. It turns out if I didn't panic I'd have been fine. I
play Ne8, which I believe is the best response.} Ne8 11. exd6 {Made a
game-ruining mistake here by not taking with the Bishop. By taking with the
Knight, he starts a combination of moves that ends up with him up a piece
after move 16. Basically, he overloads the d6 square, which I can't move
because his rook on d1 is pinning it to my Queen. Eventually, that piece
falls and the game is lost. Unfortunately, I saw this coming but had no
idea what to do about it. I ran out of time for this move and thought
taking with the Knight would be better... nope} Nxd6 (11. .. Bxd6 12. Bg5
Qa5 13. Nb5 Be7) 12. Bf4 {If 11... Nxd6 was bad, 12... f6 was the worst
move ever. Again, feeling pressure, I panicked. I actually wrote down Na5
on the my scoresheet right after, and think that was the best reply.} f6
(12. .. Na5 13. Bxd6 Bxd6 14. Nb5 Bxh2+ 15. Kxh2 Qe7 {But even though it
may have been the best move, I'm still losing after having my Bishop pinned
to my Queen}) 13. Bxe6+ Bxe6 14. Qxe6+ Kh8 15. Bxd6 Bxd6 16. Rxd6 {He
completes the combination; I'm down a full piece and have no compensation.}
Qb6 17. Qb3 Qc5 (17. .. Qxb3 18. axb3 Kg8 19. Nd4 Nxd4 20. Rxd4 Rae8 21. g3
a6) 18. Rad1 Na5 19. Qb5 {I'm already as good as lost but he forces a queen
exchange making it vastly easier on his part.} Qxb5 20. Nxb5 Nc4 {Thought I
made an okay move here, forking his Rook and Pawn. He can't defend by
moving Rd2... So I thought I was set.} 21. R6d4 {I was wrong. Now, if I
take Nb2, he can trap my knight.} Rfc8 {Move to defend.} (21. .. Nxb2 22.
Rb1 {Knight trapped}) 22. Nc7 {Clever move for him. If I take his knight,
Rxc7, he will mate me with in 2 with Rd8, Rxd8, Rxd8#} Nxb2 {He is
attacking my Rook and my Knight. I can't defend both. So I take the pawn,
he will then move to attack it, I will move my rook to safety, he will take
my Knight and then I will take his.} (22. .. Rxc7 23. Rd8+ Rxd8 24. Rxd8#)
23. R1d2 Rab8 24. g3 b5 (24. .. Kg8 25. Ne6 Nc4 26. Rc2 Nb6 27. Rxc8+ Rxc8
28. Rd8+ Rxd8 29. Nxd8 Nd5 30. Nxb7) 25. Rxb2 Rxc7 26. Rxb5 {If Rxc5, Rd8#,
mate.} Rbc8 (26. .. Rxb5 27. Rd8#) 27. h4 h6 28. h5 Kh7 29. Nh4 Rc5 {By
now, the game is lost and I'm trying to relieve pressure by trading pieces
so I can last longer. Not the best strategy. I also think I can pick off an
extra pawn in a few moves.} 30. Rxc5 Rxc5 31. g4 Rg5 32. Nf5 {This was an
awesome move, allowing him to trap my rook. If I tried hard enough, I'd be
able to free it, but only at the expense of trading a few pawns. At this
point, most games had ended and it was just time for me to be done. I
resigned.} (32. Nf5 g6 33. hxg6+ Kxg6 34. Kg2 h5 35. f3 Kf7 36. Kg3 hxg4
37. fxg4 Ke8) 1-0
